Title: OOC Discussion
Post by: SchrodingersNinja on March 21, 2018, 12:29:39 PM
Just a catch-all thread for discussing things out of character (both about the game and about anything else)

So this seems like a game that would be good to have a map for, rather than theater of the mind. Does anyone have any suggestions for sharing a map for play-by-post? In the past I have used a google spreadsheet document to draw out my map, which worked, but was a pain in my ass. Features we need: Movable player tokens, custom map support.

I've never found a good system/program/app for moving tokens and the like. What I do in my game is I make a quick map, edit it in a paint program (paint.net seems to do the trick) and attach a small (under 150k) jpg each round. It's an extra 10-15 minutes of work for each combat round but I don't have a better alternative.

I'm a-okay with us sorta just picturing it, though.

I agree that a map would help especially in this case but I also think if we can't use a map then we will be fine using theater of mind. I don't know a better way to make a map then Google spreadsheets which seems not worth it in this case.

You know what? I like the idea of using paint.net, I had never looked into it before. The layers function will do well enough for moving tokens. I had a site I used to draw nice looking rooms and dungeons, which would make a nice looking background layer.

Yep champion because it's simple and effective. Also known as the ancient kobold fighting style of "hit it till it dies!"

Btw what did y'all think of my character's backstory I'm curious?
On the topic, robin's character's backstory was pretty good it's funny, sets up an interesting and unique character and also explains why he is a warlock so 10/10.

I liked your back story. It's part of the reason the last room in the dungeon is a hatchery. I should label it.

@rjbprime question 1 how old is packrat out of curiosity.
Another question, since your character is both a fighter and uses the duel wielding fighting style same as mine, do you think packrat was trained by my character since I normally train kobold to use daggers and only more promising ones with finer sword play like with scimitars and swords (this is also my only justification for the generic kobold having dagger as their standard weapon yet us having better weapons and being over all much better.)
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: rjbprime on March 25, 2018, 02:03:10 AM
@Acetwinelf: Never thought of Packrat's age, maybe 15. That could work, that Packrat was initially trained by Feedka Soorko, then the previous hunt leader took him under their wing, got deaded, then Packrat was promoted?

Didn't really think that kobolds live that long, seeing as the normally played PCs seem to curbstomp them. Thought old age for a kobold was 30, not 4 times that. Shows how much I know.

Awesome!

And sorry that I fight to reply to your query, Acetwinelf! I think Krinn is not too old. Maybe early 20s or even 30s at the most? Not only was Feedka his broodmother, but she probably also knew Krinn's more talented predecessor, Krimm.

@Dingus you haven't missed too much but look at what you have then help us decide how to build our dungeon @SchrodingersNinja  were now working with 10 traps instead of 1 right? If so I still demand we have a falling portcullis trap (simply it's really cool in my mind plus it will be great for capturing or killing, fleeing heros because they will have no where to flee to.)

@SchrodingersNinja: is there a way we can upgrade the pit trap, to a spike pit trap? That would be useful, if we make the pit become 15ft deep, with 5ft high spikes in it, for those pesky adventurers.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Acetwinelf on April 06, 2018, 01:23:15 AM
So guys I have an idea and I want yall to tell me what yall think about it. What if we have a short flurry of traps at the entrance before they even see a kobold. This is what my mind has thought of.
We have a open portcullis at grid reference p46,p47 next at k43 we have a door that is loaded with a toxic needle trap in the handle aswell as the pressure plate for the portcullis, this will freak them out loosing their guard and they will be more likely to trigger the posion needle. Next as they pass through the door to k42 their is a fiery blast trap on the floor and then there is a fiery blast trap on k41 aswell finished off by a sleep trap at k40. This makes the hallway a very tight death trap that will destroy moral, drain hp, weaken them with posion and take some party members out of the fight by making them sleep (that also can help incase we wish to take any alive, which we should because their are a good manner of ways we can make use of them.)
What do yall think? it may work it may not but it seems pretty brutal and to protect our homes we need nothing less (this plan was also made disrigarding material components or requirments and I kinda got confused so traps may need to be switched out with more doable ones if these are impossible)
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: BlazingFox on April 06, 2018, 04:47:02 AM
Maybe throw in a crossbow trap at j/k(p/q) 37 to either shoot the first person out of the hallway (p/q), or shoot someone, maybe the wizard if they have one, in the back (j/k). Throw in the scythe trap at w/x/y/z 3 with the lever at v4 or t6 as a last defense and a pit trap at E/F 10 maybe. Opinions?
Title: Re: OOC Discussion

Sounds good on both accounts. Just need materials.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: SchrodingersNinja on April 06, 2018, 11:00:16 AM
For this first encounter, don't worry about materials for traps. I have no problem adding some spikes to a pit trap either. But after these traps are damaged or destroyed you are out of luck until you get specialists to repair or build new ones with materials. I'd appreciate a bulleted list of the traps you want to add (or you can draw them on the image with mspaint and send it back to me). After the first encounter you will go about digging out new rooms to expand and get more resources/manpower/materials.

From what I can gather, the following list of traps is what @Acetwinelf and @BlazingFox are thinking:

I'm not sure on if the portcullis is to guard the hatchery, or to trap the adventurers, as the portcullis trap panel is in the entranceway.

Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Brave Sir Robin on April 09, 2018, 10:17:42 PM
No worries, boss! We're still very much in the planning phase. ^___^

Regarding the traps, sounds like we have a good plan already. I was thinking that we should try to bottle them up somewhere where we can all shoot at them, and/or use the oil to set a fire.

What if, for example, we had portcullis traps at K37 and N37 that dropped at the same time, trapping a couple heroes in there? That would allow us to fire at them from the sleeping chamber while they try to get out.

Separating the heroes might be a good way of dealing with them. It's how kobolds think, too: they we like to attack only when we outnumber the enemy.

Krinn can also set Alarm spells as a ritual, so that we know how far intruders have passed into the warrens. I figure casting one at each hallway/choke point would make sense.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: BlazingFox on April 10, 2018, 02:19:03 AM
We could shuffle the traps around a little and try and cram as many as possible into the hallway between the first and second rooms.

As for the crossbow trap I was only thinking of placeing one, I just wasn't sure how big the pillars/rocks whatever are

I'm so so sorry for the inactivity lately guys. I got 3 week until my first year of college is done and I've been busy, pair that with my health kick and me going to the gym for two hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays I've just been exhausted. I'm recuperating now (hit 300 lbs/ 136 kg on leg press) and have just now been able to actually get on here and check threads.

I found the traps doc, created my sheet, and think I've caught up but I've missed a lot just in general lately. So first things first how does the background feature about tunnels work? Second what's this about the traps, are we still planning those out? Again apologies everyone. I will be more active here on out though.

Hey, Dingus, happy to have you back. If end of semester gets to tough don't worry about us! I'd rather hear you did well on finals than rolled a d20!

I am afraid I am not seeing the tunnels part of the background sheet you are questioning? The team is planning out their traps right now, if you have any input let them know!
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: SchrodingersNinja on April 17, 2018, 12:41:47 PM
Update: I am placing the traps on the map and should have that posted tonight. After that I think we can start the incursion. You can roleplay a bit before we start, or have your first conversation happen in a panic as a party trudges into your lair.

I am trying to make the encounters progressively harder, with time between to expand the lair and make new traps. Before the first fight is over, I should have a system of traps more formalized for you. I wanted to have it before we start, but it's really taxing coming with with rules for this stuff with no source to draw from.

@Dingus if you are busy, we will go on without you, but you can hop in at any time you wish.

@SchrodingersNinja I'm good now. I wasn't receiving notifications for the thread. Also about equipment, I looked through the threads and didn't see what we were doing for equipment. Also the Feature I was talking about is secret passages under the engineer background.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: SchrodingersNinja on April 18, 2018, 05:05:32 PM
Starting gear will be whatever is appropriate for your class (weapons, armor, and a pack usually) plus 5d4 gold (representing what you have stolen so far).

Regarding "secret passageways" I think after the first fight I will make that one of the ways you can customize your lair: by digging small tunnels from room to room so you can flank the enemy. Right now, assume you had time to dig one hidden tunnel, no longer than 10 squares long, with one entrance and one exit. Let me know where this is and I can add it to the map for you.

@SchrodingersNinja question do we still have a regular kobold with us and if so so they act on our initative or do we roll for their own.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: SchrodingersNinja on April 26, 2018, 08:02:20 AM
You will have a regular Kobold acting on your turn, controlled by you, until we run out.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Acetwinelf on April 26, 2018, 08:06:48 AM
On that topic I would like to add a rule for that.
Each kobold introduced must have a name, small thing unique to them and or a goal.
The goal of this game is to out us in the shoes of the normal dungeon enemy which means that these are no longer nameless minions but distinct individuals.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: SchrodingersNinja on April 26, 2018, 08:07:42 AM
I'll roll for names, sure. Makes sense
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Acetwinelf on April 26, 2018, 08:10:31 AM
More what I was saying is that each player must name and give a bit of backstory to the kobold they are controlling (so as not to increase the responsabilites of the DM while also possibly adding interesting named characters if any survive past the attack)
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: SchrodingersNinja on April 26, 2018, 08:11:45 AM
Ah, well if you want to pick a name and a few sentences of background or personality feel free!
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Acetwinelf on April 26, 2018, 08:18:39 AM
That was the plan but I was thinking it should be more of a concrete rule do as to keep up the feeling that everyone in the Warren is a different person. If we have to make  new Kobold each time one dies then that person should have a name and a backstory of some sort as a rule.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Brave Sir Robin on April 26, 2018, 09:32:05 AM
Heh, I like the idea of giving the kobold fodder names and a little personality so that they feel like real losses to the tribe, not just a number. Seems like a fun guideline for people who are into it. There are lots of name generators (http://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/dnd-kobold-names.php#.WuHUVJch2Uk) and even character trait generators for ideas on the fly.

I'm going to wait to name/control one until we have the clan mob them. I don't think we're necessarily meant to have one follow us around all the time, and Krinn wouldn't put up with it anyway. ^__^
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: SchrodingersNinja on April 26, 2018, 12:37:29 PM
I won't require you to make a backstory for your expendable helper, but would appreciate it if you at least rolled a name so I don't have to. If you WANT an apprentice or buddy all the time that is up to you, but this feature is intended to even the odds in combat.

Does that clear things up? Any further questions, while we wait for everyone to choose starting positions?

Ready and rearing to go.

EDIT: HP for Packrat should be 28/28. It's not very obvious on the sheet, but an easy way to calculate it is (4+(6*Fighter Level))+(Con Mod*Fighter Level) with fighter level == 3, which is how it's calculated on the sheet.

Was it inside or outside the entrance?

The first one is right on top of portcullis at the entrance, just with a mental alarm.

Another is in the next hallway, where the crossbow trap trigger is. That's an audible alarm.

And another audible alarm in the next hallway, just before the shrine area.

Hi all. Just a notification, that I may be unable to post for up to 10 days, due to having broken my glasses and needing to replace them.

As @BlazingFox can attest to, I am very short sighted, and pretty much can't see most forms of writing. I am having trouble writing this currently, have my nose pretty much right against my computer screen to see what I'm typing.

If my turn comes up in combat between now and then, I give permission for @SchrodingersNinja to NPC Packrat for that round, with Packrat's first preference to staying in his spot currently until an enemy comes within range with a readied action to attack, second, to moving closer to enemies and Two-Weapon Fighting, and third, if unable to reach an enemy within melee range, taking the dodge action.

Packrat's Current HP 28/28, Melee Attacks are To Hit: +5 / +5 (offhand), Damage: 1d6+3 slashing / 1d6+3 (offhand) slashing. His Character Sheet is here (via Dicecloud) (https://dicecloud.com/character/e7qmbGdeh6ezLHwqv/Packrat-Hunt-Leader).

Things move slow enough that I am not worried about you being gone for a bit, Prime.

By the way, if you know your prescription and can wait 3-4 weeks you could try ordering glasses from https://www.zennioptical.com. I order 3-4 pairs for the price my optometrist would charge me!

I actually don't know my prescription. I've looked at them before, do they ship to Australia? And what payment method do they take?

May have to look into them for next time, as I have already put the deposit on my current ones, which is non-refundable.

I don't know where they ship to. I've paid with Visa and American Express cards, I can't remember if PayPal is accepted

If you don't know your prescription, you really can't use them yet. Next time you get your eyes checked, ask for it and make sure you get your pupil distance, you could save yourself some money.
